Supermoto, Trials, Trail & Enduro Motorcycles

Yamaha XT660X
The Yamaha XT660X is the first production Supermoto from Japan. Here are the first images & my take on the very first example of this new bike. It was tricky to source, initially it seems they are thin on the ground, hopefully availability will improve through the year. Looking at the bike its apparent it's relatively built down to a price with many budget items: pillion peg brackets, steel swinging arm, wheels spoilt by cheap spokes and cheapo levers. Conversely you get the lovely black excel rims, brembo caliper, braided front brake hose, alloy afam bars and a cool fork brace.

Its important to remember that the XT range has been a budget priced bike (in Europe if not UK) and its far from a race replica SM in both price, spec & weight. The XTX is intended to be the modern, robust all rounder in SM trim. More of a Steetmoto than racer. Weight wise it ain't light, feels the same, or more,  than the naked SV650 I had last year and considerably heftier than the TT600R I recently sold. Price wise its not bad, as an import, its circa £4300-4400 and something of a bargain compared to CCM, KTM etc. So for the right money maybe we can excuse some of its basic spec.

Riding impressions & more later................

If you want more info on this bike, email or give me a call - I've blagged this first example for my own use...Mike H.

First impressions:

After a long delay getting bike reg - bloomin' bureaucrats.........
I finally get the first gentle ride on the XTX.
Immediate impressions are: Civilised, smooth engine, stable precise
steering and secure, sold handling. Superb front brake, but lever not
adjustable. Its really smooth , for a single that is. Some vibes are there,
but more low frequency rumbles rather than annoying tingles. You can even use the mirrors...
Bear in mind I'm trying to run the bike in, and keeping it to 100 top speed
.........kph that is.
Tall gearing means I'm in 4th on the small country lanes I prefer.
SM tweaked suspension gives one or two crunches from the front on pot
holes, where a trail bike would more likely not notice. But it is far superior to a road bike on the bumpy lanes.
However generally the handling impresses with none of the twitchyness some trail based SMs have.
Very good headlight, but too bright full beam LED can distract.

More later.......

Excellent fuel economy, over 60 mpg usually. Stonking engine!
