- TEAM KWACKERS ***
NEWS AND COMMENT
WHILE
STOCKS LAST - SUPER HR RIDING SHIRTS AT KNOCK DOWN PRICE
PRACTICE/TRAINING
EVENT
February 19th
Seven sections, 2 hours each direction
- both ways too hard for some newcomers on Reds. By section 3 Blues
had got tough. Jesse had a 5 but after consultation with the resident
don changed it to clean. Section 4 was another matter where he watched
Dave B, Keith Edwards and Graham Knight have about 10 goes each all 5’s
and Clint pulling ‘em out of the ditch - ‘You try it’ says Keith to Clint
- he did - clean! Coming over the brow of the slippery drop Barry
had several goes at catching young Will not always successfully.
Other sections were also testing but that’s what these days are about,
many must have ridden 100 times during the day and been a bit weary but
all had a smile at the end.
Section 1 in reverse had Clint telling
blues they should be in bottom gear, not third, Clint however cleaned it
first go but refused to attempt again as it may not repeat! Sam H
had his first go at a Yellow and Katie at a Blue - when she started Keith
said to her ‘Please don’t go and clean it’ (she nearly did!) Dom
J and Jesse enjoying the conditions (on and off) but still had energy for
clearing up which everyone helped get done quickly. Thanks to the
course markers, Clint and Mike for instruction and the participants for
all the laughs given to the onlookers - better than watching a trial anyday!
A WINTER WARMER
Northlands Club Trial - 6th March
RESULTS
OUT AND ABOUT - ITMA
Group Trial run by Carshalton Club at Don Barratt;s was a slippery one
especially
on the chalky hills so scores were high. James Fry won the experts
on 40, Adam Bird the Inters on 141! Mick Huskinson 3rd in Over 40’s
on 82 and John Pocklington retired - don’t blame him.
Sammy Miller Series of
trials for classic bikes had a total of 9 classes for an entry of 70, in
it’s first round in February with the Barratt Trial in Gloucester.
Even the trail bike class, there to make the numbers up, is divided into
easy and hard routes. Mike chose the latter and was runner up - worth
the visit.
Forthcoming Attractions
Horsham Riders Group Trial on 8th May at
Rome Woods. This year it is strictly a pre entry trial, no entries
on the day. Numbers limited to 70. Entry forms will be available
in March from Mike, Dick or Fiona. Observers will be needed for this
event, please help if you can - and you may win a prize too!. Entry
form here
World Trials Round - Hawkstone Park - July 30/31 I understand from Keith
T that he and Dave A are interested in going, there’s overnight camping
etc and I know Mike wants to arrange an HR party if possible. Contact
him for further information and more details will be published when available.

COMMITTEE MEETING REPORT
Trials Entry Numbers - Parking and land capacity strained at recent
oversubscribed events. Big discussion ending only in stopping adverts
in TMX otherwise wait and see how it develops. If no improvement
other action will be taken as we want to limit the entry to 70 - 80.
We may also stop the red route in winter months.

£20 each - first come, first served - it’s the bargain of a lifetime

When the committee decided HR should
have some slippery training they elected Rome Woods in February as
the venue - they got one! 30 turned out to enjoy the experience on
sections set by Richard S, Nial Spreadbury and Uncle Dave and the Philpots
- Ben mainly, so the youngsters got involved too which was a good sign;
Sam Aldrich was to have helped but had gone down with the bug. Colin
H decided he needed the session after his result in the last trial, Kevin
B’s guvnor took him round on foot as it was free of tennis elbow, Kevin
T handed in another HR logo with a Latin inscription - did it say big balls
up? Barry Fitz signed the parent of William as Dick Husband trying
to ease family finances and Professor Clinton arrived on a 50 cc Honda
to give the tutorials.
Trying to mark a route on Friday
proved to be stupid, with 2” snow and a blizzard it was hard enough for
a gnome to walk round. On Saturday solid frozen ground met what remained
of the Harley team; Clint and Gary Medhurst, with difficult circumstances
- how much was this going to thaw? As there were only 2 of them they
carried the entire box of flags round. Clint did White and Blue,
Gary Yellow and Red. It did thaw, it got slippery, scores soared,
no audible complaints and everyone got knackered!
Early birds were in the gate soon
after 9am (opening time is 9.15!) - ever since that 108 entry where some
didn’t get cards, socks have been pulled up and even John Y and Kevin Mac
and Alan L were early, that’s good it enabled an early start at 10.15 and
time for the sickness report. Good to see Pete B back, the cut throat
under the collar come to see the cutthroat of HR riders though he’s met
with the cry ‘don’t wag yer ‘ed!’ Teabag’s bike remained at
home his back went click when he bent to pick something up (5p?)
No sight of the tennis elbow and Sam Aldrich only had astounding tales
to tell of the effect of his recent flu though the symptoms sounded similar
to the morning after and the one he’ll suffer after this trial. Several
bikes were not in the best of health either; Pete Penton, up from Dorset,
kicked his (not an unusual trait) for 10 minutes to start, 3 got pushed
back, 1 chain, 1 petrol, 1 plug, 1 towed with a trailer strap - utterly
shattered, John Y had to bump start down the road as had no kickstart,
he couldn’t stop all day and Keith Tracey had to put duct tape over his
air holes to get the Chinese Honda torquey - sounds painful!
When Clint came back after putting
the punches out he said I’m not sure the blues aren’t too easy (it was
still freezing). We soon found out. The first lap seemed
OK but by the 2nd that hard surface had become slimy and by lap 3 slurry,
anyone who didn’t fall off was a star. Level pegging on 28 + 32 =
60 marks lost were Tim H and Alan L with Kevin T just 2 dabs away, Tim
was pleased to be down from the white route and Alan said of whites - never
again!
Mounting in tens scores drove upwards,
Dave B narrowly missing and 5 passing the century barrier : John Illingworth
(who should have been in the Harley team but only rejoined on the day!)
kept 10 up on Benge 10 up on Ryan Geere - his mate Paul Reynolds was up
with the big boys. Finally Jesse B the only schoolboy on blues, riding
dad Pete’s 250 till he gets a new one, was a bit miffed, it was hard.
Tim cheers him up walking a section to give a line - Jesse cleans - Tim
falls off!
Whites really did have a hard
time, reaching a higher total than the blues and 2 out of 7 retiring.
Even winner Clint on his new 4 stroke Mont lost 39 - astronomical for him
in a club trial. I watched whites from Section 5 as usual they arrive
in a cluster and study the ground for an hour - by section 7 it seemed
like a morning as Duncan A walks along a fallen tree 4 ft in the air -
I wondered what on earth they had to ride here - but it turned out to be
quite rideable for some. Section 8 was another story, a big slippery
log right at the start looked awful, Sam Aldrich and Duncan both cross
for a dab. Pete and Adam can’t get on top, Clint cleans and Mick
H does a detour. But 10 was the hardest, logs and water, mud banks
and gulleys. Duncan made a good effort, most got 5, as did Clint
on his last lap, only having cleaned it once during the day spent hopping
front and rear wheels showing it really could be done.
Yellows attracted 50% of the entry
as usual. O 70 Derek Cranfield miles ahead but good to see the Harley
team man Gary M in 3rd and upcoming Graham Knight next. That old
Fantic of Gary’s has a history and he’s had it for 10 years or more, but
the grip that bike gets was admired by many with too much power at the
rear wheel. Nick H was another getting grip on his 125 4 stroke Scropa
which he says has to have it’s neck wrung occasionally to get it up the
hill. Mick Dunstan was level, an improving Andy Martin (didn’t have
a shirt big enough for him!) just behind. Dom Jarrett led the schoolboy
collection with Sam Foster and Jack Northover within striking distance.
Jack’s dad said afterwards that he thought the yellow route was one of
the best the club had run - a compliment to Gary indeed. Katie found
it hard work but her score was well behind the totals on other routes.
Even Reds didn’t have an easy
day scores coming up to 95. A wobbler was in the lead of 4 schoolboys
then another wobbler came up the rear. Was it Ben Philpot who got
pushed back after he’d finished? Whatever, his dad bought 2 shirts
to take to Devon to wave the HR flag - good for them.
Now all that was left - getting
out and clearing up - the two man willing Harley team got a bit of help
sorting the kit from Kate and Sam but various white-van men needed more
than that to go home. 6 or 7 heavy bodies rocked Kevin Mac’s
van back and forth before it finally gripped and shot forwards leaving
two pushers flat on their faces! Eric Scutt and Ian Mac were another
matter, the caravan had to be unhooked from the club slave’s vehicle to
extract their vehicle so we could all go home. The day before had
knackered Clint’s dog who laid on the sofa lefts akimbo to rest - Clint
reckons tonight that’ll be me!
Derek H had visited and said we
should go and see him on his 1908 Triumph riding No. 43 in the Pioneer
Run from Epsom on March 20th - don’t ask him about the brakes or how it
got it’s MOT - it’s got no clutch either. Mooching back from section
10, three of us, Teabag, Derek and me - we bump into Duncan - “Last of
the Summer Wine” he says.
Thanks to everyone who helped, the
team, Nick with parking, Richard and Fiona signing on and all those who
bought a shirt - oh and Keith Tracey the first to volunteer as observer
at our May Group Trial.

The DK Mansell Trial is
a round of the British Trials championship for pre75 Classic bikes and
includes classes for twinshock, monoshock aircooled and O 40 riders on
modern bikes - an interesting mixture as they all ride the same sections.
Needless to say Dave Thorpe won the 1st group on a much modified Cub losing
43 but leader of 2nd group on 32 was (ITMA) Clint Leggett. Elsewhere
in the O 40 group Mike H dropped 69 and was 7th in his group, there were
several 4 stroke Monts in the 114 entry - Mike had tied with the best of
these, results for the others were not encouraging.
Brian Fowler Memorial Trial is on 20th March at Dunsfold - entry
forms available from Shaun on 01903 815521.
HR Riding Shirts still have £680 in stock - to get them to move
they are being offered at a loss at only £20 each.
Group Trial - Duncan - Clerk of the Course, Richard - back marker,
Starter Tim or Dick.
Social - following success of skittles evening it was asked if anyone
had any other ideas for creating an evening get together or how to improve
club nights - no response!
Next meeting in June
