JANUARY 06 NUMBER 131

** NEXT MONTHS TRIAL AT MANNINGS HEATH     TEAM ENFIELDS -
 Richard Shoesmith 01798 869296, Phil Jobbins 01293 851462  Nick Herridge 01403 210925, Sean Parsons 01403 730799, Graham Knight 0193 871955

NEWS AND COMMENT
After that enlarged Xmas Newsletter, thanks largely to our regular contributor Garry (Mr Budge to you), this issue is likely to be a bit of a non event, we need to convalesce.  However you will need to be reminded of the good things in store which were in the issue you’ve just thrown away i.e.

Saturday Jan 21st 9.30 am  A working party at Mannings Heath to clear some hills and banks but let Dick know if you will attend or he won’t go either!  Tools will be needed.

Saturday Jan 28th - 7 pm at Ewhurst - the Food and Skittles night has not (at the time of writing) reached the limited number - phone ASAP to check there is still room.

Saturday Feb 18th - is the first practice/training event for 2006 at Rome Woods - full details next month.  Other similar events will be held at Northlands and Manning Heath.

MEMBERSHIP
Thirty considerate gentlemen sent their membership renewals in last month - thanks to them and especially ones who helped with a postage donation.  One member said it’s the best 8 quid he spends each year ….. Take note of that the hundred or so who’ve yet to cough up!  There’s an additional thing known as a VEILED THREAT - for 2006 non-members riding will be £12 (s/b £8) and joining on the day of an event considered an unimaginable impertinence - don’t ask!

YOUR DIARY DATES
To enable you to pencil in all the 20 events or more that the club provides you with each year, we have produced a provisional list as under and intend to have this in each club news in future.

So with all the coming year listed and arranged we can return to convalescing but not before extending to all our members A HAPPY NEW YEAR AND MANY RUNGS OF THE LADDER BETWEEN YOU AND TERRA FIRMA.
Which brings us neatly to :

THE 2005 LADDER RESULTS

The final results are enclosed showing best performances and support for the club throughout the years events.  To most it is unfathomable but someone did write the rules like this :
If you finish 4 events you get listed on the ladder.
Finish 6 events or more you drop some worst results - I.e. 6 - 7 drop 1, 8 or 9 drop 2, 10 or 11 drop 3, 12 or 13 drop 4.
The scores are totalled and averaged.
From the average deduct 1 bonus point for each event entered.
Anyway it’s a bit of fun and we all finish in the right order BUT comments on progress or whatever will be mentioned next month!
Note this year we did not include the January trial in the ladder as it was the one we had so many entrants there were not enough cards to go round.

SECURITY AND INSURANCE
Mike has given us a leaflet available from DVLA reference INF 85 and INF85D which informs how you can register bikes, plant and machinery via DVLA with engine chassis numbers etc.  It costs nothing and may help the police trace and identify anything nicked.  Ian Mac has said he will also be writing on this matter in the next issue (there’s an awful lot being put off till next issue - aren’t you overdoing this convalescence?

OUT AND ABOUT
That Andy Blackman who wiped the floor with our white riders at the last trial is actually the Southern Centre Champ and finished in front of Wayne Holdsworth at the Jack White Southampton club event.
Brighton club ran the last Group trial at Faygate but not a big entry.  Only 2 experts and 2 Inters tackled the muddy course and very few HR’s attended.  Phil T Wand was placed 2nd in the Novices dropping 63 to the leaders 44.  In the Over 40’s Mick Huskinson was on 90 coming 4th, Steve Wells led with 67 ml.  Over 50’s only Bob Collins held the club banner - 23 ml was written on it and he came 3rd.  What’s this surprise 3 HR’s on the Clubman route need a proper listing - Mike was riding his Pampera.
Clubman 1 - (1. S Rye 9ml)  3. Mike Husband 42, 5. John Pocklington 55, 8. John Illingworth 60
Final placings for the south Coast Group over the 12 rounds have been completed - selected results are :

Expert - 1. James Fry  2. Scott Farley  3.  Adam Farley  4. S Foord
Inter -  1. Adam Bird  2. Mark Jordan   3. P Davies  4. Peter Bowker
Over 40  - 1. Mick Huskinson  2. A Brown  3. Steve Wells
Over 50  - 1. Frank Puttock  2. R Charman  5. Bob Collins
And Tony Martin won the Wobblers - good for him!

ANNOUNCEMENT
The WI have done it.  The farmers have done it, so how about HR …. A nude Calendar …. 12 members on their bikes wearing boots with original themes (a kettle for Dave A etc).  Private parts would be cunningly concealed - the pictures would be set in an area of outstanding natural beauty.  All we want is 12 volunteers to provide us with a picture to be printed on a calendar for 2007 entitled Horsham Riders in aid of Riders for Health - any volunteers.  Dave Mears’ wife said I should be December shown without teeth but with leg brace and catheter to be entitled ‘The Twilight Zone’ could be fun!

SO THIS IS 2006

Rome Woods parking lot was filling up fast as 77 riders, spectators and dogs turned out for an enjoyable bank holiday trial on Monday.  Mind you it didn’t help when Sam Aldrich suffers a full stop and flat battery on the turn round.  Long before that early arrivals were joining an ever lengthening queue while Father Christmas, at the desk, attempted to sign them on, get membership, discuss skittles, weather, trials, births and deaths etc in utter confusion.  Fiona arrived, normality restored so we were able to hoot off at 10.15.
The Ajay team, aware that ‘incapability’ was likely to be the operative word on New Years Day, decided to set out the previous Thursday when it was freezing and the ground solid.  It bucketed with rain on the Friday so many modifications were carried out, some thought a few more wouldn’t have gone amiss when 25% of the blues and 50% of the yellows finished in the dnf column.  At this time of year Rome and its horrors are a nightmare for lesser riders.  The team turned out in force, quickly getting the job done.  Mike H - Whites, Dave B - Blue and John R - Yellows assisted by Paul H, Chris S and Adrian B, laid out an event to enjoy but knackering if you finished!
Whites had 14 riders - a big entry for us, but with a predictable result.  Jamie Jones miles ahead and Steve Farrall in 2nd place.  Pete Bowker was joined by his brother Neil and dragged the old man, Reg, out to look on but it was too far to walk.   The interest is in the HR men, Mike on new Beta 250, Tony Flegg, with his brand spanking new tyres returning to the hard route, 3 points ahead of Jesse Brooker.  Then, as a joint winner on the blue route in last years ladder, Ryan Geere has raised his sights and joined the Inters on Whites, just 9 marks back from Jesse, he’s off to a good start.  Finally we have a 2nd schoolboy A with new member, from Woking, James Ray - watch out Jesse!  Garry Budgen twisted his unfortunate knee early on in the event and dnf.  Keith Tracey, now recovered was back with his Chinese Honda Gas Gas, it broke down on section 9, so it hadn’t recovered as well.
The Blue route again saw Tim H in the lead, he’d better get back to Whites said some!  Mick Rivett and Phil T Wand are occasional visitors, both of those had Dad’s around too - must be the weather.  So 2nd HR was Ian Mc, this time keeping 1 up on Paul R who was missing the competitive push from Ryan as Phil Walker was from Tony F.  Charlie Page, one of only 2 in the schoolboy section, must have found the going somewhat more sympathetic than Dominic, a 64 point difference in marks shows that but Charlie had been going well on Yellows.  Pete Brooker went down to yellows early on annoying Benge a bit and he dnf.
From the analysis you will see it was a hard time for many yellows but those that finished show an almost prefect range of scores from 9 to 111.  The sometime blue riders head the list, Brian B, obviously finding that Mont gets lots of grip, on 9, but 2nd HR was 21 marks back, Bob Collins on his new 200 Beta which hadn’t started before this event.  John Pocklington on 125 Scorpa was another who found the grip, similarly mounted Nick though didn’t find didn’t find much as he crossed the steams and has put Fiona on his Christmas card list for pulling him out.  Jack Northover told me he loved the event especially sect 9 where he wanged it up the hill in 3rd and he finished best part of 50 in front our our girls Katie and Emma.  Tony Martin reckoned he’d be aching all over the next day in the effort to keep ahead of Grandson Scott (by 30!).  New family members the Brays (3 of ‘em, Nigel, Josh and Tom) made their mark taking some time to get all 3 bikes working - they started about 1.30, didn’t score and unsurprisingly dnf.
Red route riders, as you know we do not put in a red route until the conditions are OK for beginners however if people do want to ride easier than Yellow route we say all you have to do is go through the begins and ends cards for a score ignoring the yellow gates.  It is important that in doing reds you only ride on the set route, entering does not permit riding elsewhere on the site.  We had two finishes in this class Sam and Will, they both had a tough ride and did well to get round, Barry Fitz said it was tougher for Dads.
Finally when I put the ladder results in the window Paul Reynolds pointed out he wasn’t 2nd but tied with Ryan and John Pock and Richard Shoesmith groaned at seeing fiddler tea bag ahead - ‘unfair!’ they exclaimed saying - but David retires in all the hard trials to keep his average down - shame.
Thanks to the team for 77 tired bodes, thanks to Fiona for adding up all the cards after the trial and for getting the ladder results finished the night before.  Thanks to Dave Blackman for reminding us how those TL’s didn’t go.
