JANUARY NUMBER 120
NEWS AND COMMENT

REMINDERS!!!
SUBS - Membership for 2005 is now due, only those who’ve joined will get next
month’s Newsletter -Do it now.  Thanks to all those who did it promptly and thanks
for contributions too.  (2005 membership cards will be sent out with Feb
newsletter)
SKITTLES - Saturday 29th Jan 7.00 pm.  Still haven’t got the numbers we need -
at £10 a head including grub it promises to be a good evening - if you haven’t
booked we must know before January 19th - please give us your support.
COMMITTEE MEETING - Wednesday 9th  February at Dog and Bacon - same as
club night - 8.30 pm.
HR RIDING SHIRTS - Quality trials shirts at half the price you pay to advertise
other peoples products, at £25 each available M, L or XL - see  Dick or Fiona.

LAST MONTH We had the best Xmas bumper issue in 10 years and gave you a
good read over the holiday.  Thanks to all contributors especially John R who has
nearly convinced me to buy a new Royal Enfield - the one with the electric start
though.

THIS MONTH  Will include the 2004 ladder results (as long as Fiona’s computer
cooperates!)  Every year we need to explain it to new members.  Briefly to occupy
a rung you need to finish 4 events in one class, marks lost are averaged and a
bonus point deducted for each trial entered.  If you enter more events worst results
are dropped I.e. 6/7 events drop 1, 8/9 drop 2, 10/11 drop 3, 12 drop 4.  This
calculation is shown  over a series of columns together with a comparison of the
last years result.  DNQ means ‘did not qualify’ - GOT IT??  In 2004 we had a total
of 14 white riders, 34 blue, 67 yellow and 22 red.

Ladder 04 (pdf file) here

NEXT MONTH You’ll get the 2005 programme and team lists in full plus
recollections of the first 10 years of Horsham Riders as it was February 26th 1995
when our first event was held, if any members would like to remember woes or
delights they’ve had from the club and submit a little contribution that’ll be most
welcome.

FEBRUARY SET OUT TEAM is Derek Head’s Beesas.  Now that team is a bit
depleted and Derek hasn’t got a trials bike.  The team members will be made up
but in the meantime if anyone can give Derek a hand (or a trials bike) ring him on 01403 822067.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
From Jeff Cox : Afraid I won’t be at the February anniversary trial as will
only have just returned from skiing.  Haven’t previously noticed on the
membership form that HR hold events in “local sties” (it’s been like that
for years so perhaps the old Horsham Bacon factory had a hand - Ed.)
……… anyway Jeff concludes : Thought the enclosed might be appropriate!

I have a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marks four my revue
Miss Steaks eye cannot sea

Each thyme when eye have struck the quays
I weight for it two say
If watt I rote is wrong or rite
(It shows me straight a weigh)

As soon as a miss take is maid
I no bee four two late
Sew I can put the error rite
Lest I should find it grate

I’ve run this poem threw it
I’m shore your policed to no
It’s letter perfect in it’s weigh
My chequer told me so

ENTRY EXPLOSION     Rome Club Trial 2nd Jan 05

(Pic from Steve Hook, a few more to be added later)

Apologies & Numbers - In the ten years of HR nothing like this has ever
happened, the previous highest entry was at Walliswood a few years back, it was
76, several times we’ve been in the 70’s so we cater for 80 max.  That’s the
number that fills the Rome car park, causes problems at other sites and causes
constant queues at Walliswood spoiling the trial for some, so 80 it is.  When 108
arrive what can we do, especially as they’ve travelled from afar to get there.  In the
end 28 had to ride without cards, we apologise to members who aren’t listed, 5 of
them kept scores on paper so they’re in the results.  Of course this number made
queuing inevitable, some retired due to this, but thankfully we didn’t get any stick
and we’ll discuss how to deal with this situation in future.

Set Out Team The Ajays, Mike, Dave B, John R, Adrian B and Chris S, thinking
they’d be unable to drive on New Years Day decided to put the course in on the
previous Wednesday - fortunately it stayed up.  It had rained well beforehand so it
was Rome at it’s best but all routes topped the ton with double digits for the leading
lights, even so all riders were complimentary - one said the Blues were “spot on”.

Sign On - Boy, that was a long lasting queue to set the pattern for the day, they
came from everywhere, Southend, Cheltenham, Faverhsam, to arrive earlier than
some (no names) who live down the road - was I pleased when Fiona arrived, what
with members renewing, flogging the skittles evening and all.
The Roving Reporter arrived at Section 5 to hear gentle encouragement being
given to young Jack Thompson and Sam Aldrich, riding with Duncan was having his
first go at whites - what a day to choose, he said it was expensive (115) but Gary
Budgen riding (to decoke it he said) the old man’s gasser managed 138 on whites!
Then Nick H on the lovely little Yam moved around the slippery bank for a series of
3 unnecessary dabs followed by a spinning Kev McDavitt making it look difficult.

Tea Bag arrived and stood his gleaming 2005 Mont 4 stroke against a tree “I have
to do that as I need to stand on the foot rests to deliver an almighty kick to get it
going” - This story will return - see section 10.  He went round the section rather
quickly as apparently it ticks over at 1800 and is high geared - I preferred Nicks
Yam!
Section 8 almost on my arrival Phil T-Wand (haven’t seen them for ages) went into
the last dip of the gully on his ear and brother Mark smiled for 3.  Their Dad Derek,
didn’t push them (only up to the bar) unlike Will Fitz dad Barry kindly stopping the
bike going into reverse.   He wasn’t available for a later reversing session where
Will talking to Sam H and sitting on his seat paddled the machine backwards to the
edge of a deep ditch and disappeared!  Ian Mac and Brian B took so long looking at
this one so I moved.
Section 9  had a long slippery hill for white and blue.  Gary B was into the Gas Gas
by now, a couple of dabs saw him reach the ends.  Then Bob Collins flies up
knocking his hat off on a branch, “hold the bike Dick while I get it.”  Sam Aldrich
really looked good - I said - “Pity I fell off at the bottom!” the reply.  Pete Brooker
was not having the best of it - he was on Jesse’ s old bike to let the lad loose with
the power (he ain’t sold enough firewood yet - obviously).
Section 10 Another lot of slipping, sliding and jeering so I chatted to the queue.
Benge was happy Adam Bird gave him a technique!  Slippery ups in 4th? - slip the
clutch to build the torque - “I’ve got lots of torque” says Benge, “Bullsh-t you
mean” says Tim Martin.  It shook everyone when the playboy got to the top - “the
bike’s full of it” they cried meaning BS of course.  Clint described a conversation
with Tea Bag who he found leaping in the air trying to start the Mont “You don’t do
it like that - you could start it with your hand!” - apparently it’s a gentle push, a
gentle swing, leave the throttle and presto - an amazed Dave promised the
professor he’d read the handbook in future.
White Jamie Jones set the pace, this time Clint’s twin shock didn’t outdo him and
Duncan had a good ride but Peter Bowker didn’t.  Sean Parsons who is in front of
Duncan on the 04 ladder ended in Mike territory.  But what happened to Kevin
Nolan?  He didn’t hand in any cards so perhaps the queues were too much (or the
marks?)

Blue Alan Lavender and Nigel Sparks were two of the unfortunates who didn’t get
cards but it was all there on bits of paper and they tied, Nigel sported another new
Mont (same as TB’s) he must have read the handbook.  I’m afraid you have to look
at the bottom to spot other regulars but 5 blue members didn’t get cards so we
will not include this event in next years ladder.

Yellow Top HR riders was Graham Knight - he has been constantly up the top this
time pressed by Gary Medhurst with John Y going down the plughole - what
happened to him, even schoolboy Dom Jarrett stood on his hat.  Nick H is finding
that Yam (Scorpa really?) nice in the mud, he’d shot off quick for a 1st lap total of
6, he still had a good ride 2 in front of Ken R.  Mick Dunstan had a nearly new Beta
for Xmas but thinks it has a knock.  The HR school boys and girls found this trial
hard but not Dom J apparently.

Red Ben Philpot rode at his New Year best to finish 1st again - I think it’ll be
yellows this year.  Elsewhere Sam and Will found a new eagerness for trials with a
bit of close competition.
THANK YOU MATE! Thanks to everyone in the team and those who helped clear
up and Clint who towed Eric Scutt from a car park hole Clint had visited before and
let’s hope we don’t see that many riders again!

GROUP NEWS - Clint misses the Twin Shock!!
Last round for 2004 run by the Brighton Club at Faygate tip had about 50
entries.  It was a slippery messy day which included some ditch jumping
for whites - not easy.  Clint was running in a new Montesa for a mate (the
4 stroker) - trying it out before the start he split the mudguard and from
then on went with caution putting him well down the list.  But on a Novice
Blues Adam Bird continued his run of wins and easily won the series too -
congratulations.
