Lots in Store for 004
Listed later is the list of events HR will be running this year, 17 in all
including 3 Saturday training sessions.  Dave Alder is holding his practice
days once a month plus there’s Halnaker practice as well so you can get
about 30 opportunities to ride your bike but there’s more ….

HR on Tour in 004 – a weekend in Wales
Peter and Benge are the driving force behind this possibility for HR to have
2 trials on a 100 acre site full of lovely Welsh streams and some big hills.
Camping and B & B accommodation in local town will be available.  This is
scheduled to take place in 2nd week of June, Pete and Benge want to know
how many are interested in the trip, talk to them or phone Pete 01273
832912 or Benge 01825 840085.  Of course the whole thing depends on 2
factors –first a reccy visit to the site to check OK and will take place in
February,  P & B welcome anyone interested in going and secondly how
many of you are interested in the event. Incidentally P says he can hire a
big trailer and take 10 – 15 bikes if it helps.

TEAM NEWS
Team Organiser Richard Shoesmith has written to ask if team leaders will
please phone their helpers to make sure they are coming a couple of weeks
before the event.  He will phone the leader a week before to check all is OK
and if there are problems there will be time to sort it out.  Once 2004
members are all listed a reserve list will be prepared to provide
replacements if necessary. Riders not listed on teams are reminded they
should be prepared to help if only for one day a year.
ROAD RUNS
Richards asks that anyone interested in a day or evenings ride out this
year should let him know so he can arrange details.

A lively Club Night and Committee Meet
When the Chessington Mafia turned up there were 12/14 HR faces on the
end of the beer mugs, the landlord was so pleased he asked the frequency
of our meetings to set an area aside!  You could spot the drivers – Ian
standing well away while Tea Bag’s consumption of amber nectar proved
equal to a days Brooke Bond, when Ian pleaded to depart Dave became
immobile.  Richard had spotted men in blue on his way so sipped his coke,
he suggested we might have a club caravan painting party if there’s any
offers of help in the Spring.

Other Committee Matters were :
Teams : Richard would prepare a reserve list from suitable riders who are not
currently listed.  Anyone willing/wanting to get on a team let him know.
Road Runs : Richard again!  Would like to arrange some runs this summer and
wants contact with those interested – Dave (Pan-Euro), Bif (CBR) were on for it.
Section Markers :  We stay with the flags – next team straightens wires!
And a Nice Pub in Cornwall where Dave and Ian are off to in February – want to
go along?  Tell Dave, T Bag to you.
2nd Camping Weekend :  This has come about by popular demand.  It was quite
difficult to get it into the programme but it’s going to be in the field at Northlands
for the May 2nd event.  This is a bank holiday weekend so expect extra trials and 2
barbecues?  Pencil it in now as it’s Benge’s birthday too!

Kevin’s Komputational Kapers
The end of the year report on how you fared over the season showing your current ranking
(should I say rung) on the ladder of fame has this year been fed into a fiendish computer
programme devised by Kevin Brooker.  Look at it long and hard – it is understandable even
by this luddite – I hope it arrives in time for this issue.  Not quite - but will be in next
Month!!

Finally There’s Many a Slip
My apologies for omitting one of the full teams from the list and they did
well too.  The DUGGIES dropped a total of 112 and came 4th so the close
finish was event tighter than I thought :
1. Indians 76  2. Greevies 104  3. Farmers 110  4. Duggies 112  5/6  Ajays & Landlords
116.
All other teams drop a position down to Laverdos in 15th place!  Serves ‘em right – the
only team with nil attendance.

HOGMANAY HANGOVER - CLUB TRIAL - ROME WOODS  JAN 4TH

Bleary-eyed, early New Years Day, I answer the phone “Happy New Year”
says voice, thinking it was someone from last nights shenanigans the
conversation continued for 5 minutes till I discovered it was Derek - he
actually wants to walk the route that morning and has team problems : 1
working, 1 has ingrowing toenail, and James has to get down from
Reading.  All is saved by Richard S and Nick H offering to help but they got
a shock when they discovered Derek took an hour a section so they
pressed on, by Section 8 Derek was working away at No. 3 saying I like my
winning riders to lose 10 marks or less - they nearly did it on Blues when
Dan Laker, normally white, sharing son’s bike lost 12 and son Richard said
“he’s getting too old for whites”  But for the rest it was high scores all
round.

61 riders signed on.  Much Happy New Yearing, several late arrivals, new
faces and members.  Tony Verbeeten amongst them with a load of bikes
none of which started willingly, one getting dismantled.  By then Garry
Budgen was pushing the Fantic back, flywheel key broken.  Off home for
tools goes Garry then gives up and scrounges a share of Kevin B’s bike.
But it was a bad day for sharing and lots of blank bits on their cards got
filled with 5’s.  None of the Verbeeten clan finished.  Even Richards S was
later than usual, he’d had to dismantle his Land Rover carb on route to the
event; as he and Nick had set the yellows and reds they set off a couple of
minutes early to check them out.  Having the first ride on each they only
lost 4 or so on the lap and worried it might be too easy!!  Some Blues had
suddenly gone yellow for the day like Pete and Jesse Brooker who on 120
plus didn’t find it a romp.

After an easy starter section 2 was in a pond for Blues and Whites where
Mr. Head showed his evil intent.  It was getting cleaned early on but the
water got deeper and deeper from sump level to wheel-top causing Jack
Pickering to flood his engine and retire.  On the last lap Steve Farrall
punched a 5 saying it’s only two more marks and not worth the risk.  It
also gave Mark Jordan and others wet footsies pleasing Mike who can sell
them waterproof socks.  Some red riders thought it too easy by section 3, I
suggested they went yellow but after big ones all round “think we’ll stick
to red” they said and watched the studious riding of David Alder as he had
a big 5 too.

Onto No. 4 to see Dan and Alan Lavender fly up the greasy hill and Kev B
on his ear down in the valley.  But No. 5 was hilarious, when I arrived
there’s Tea Bag. Back wheel pointing skyward and unable to move - he’s
there for 20 minutes while blue route riders whiz around him - till James H
comes to the rescue.  It turned out he’d ended up there from section 6 but
had a good view of the section seeing Alan L unusually on his backside and
Kev B ditto with Garry B extracting the bike.  By now Jack Thompson’s Dad
saw a future for a route between red and yellow!

Ian Mac and Mark Webber were watching each other on No. 6 Blue which
both cleaned however Ian finished knackered as did Mark Johnson but the
first Mark lost less marks and got in third place.  Then came the stream, a
tough old step for the whites.  Tim H held it up a while as his chain came
off on the rocks.  Peter Bowker stuck at the top had a lifting experience to
get out, Mick Huskinson had had enough but Mike and Clint managed a 3.
Later in the day Steve F and Clint did it for 1.  But, Saint Clinton (now with
beard) was not having one of his best days and commented the entry fee
was very low for a world round!  Greeted by another stream at No. 8 Tim H
dropped in straight over the handlebars - he finished the day as Fiona
carried his mudguard back.  But on No. 8 the yellows were happy with easy
up and downs described by Richard as a Moto X section - no wonder Phil
Jobbins was still smiling, he was happy not to be on blues.
So on whites it was Steve F who led S/B Jamie Jones by just 2 marks and
Pete Penton in front of Clint for the first time ever.  Harry Reed making his
first attempt at whites (what a day to pick) kept a few in front of Tim who
was escorting Katie on the Reds at the same time.

Blues saw another slipped star - Alan Lavender pushed into 4th place by
Laker, Mills and Webber but the guy who had the good day was Dave
Blackman as long as you don’t look at the gap between him and Alan.
Then Yellows where normally on single marks John Y drops 33 and only
makes 3rd spot, his bike had never seen such revs - but look at the rising
Richard Laker.  In fact that whole list is not in usual order, Nick ahead of
Richard S, Ken R and Jim Scott on 78 and Gary Medhurst between Nick and
Kevin Mac - it’s a funny world when it’s wet.  Finally Dominic Philpott
leading the 4 red finishers - all deserve a medal as 7 of the entry dnf.
Nick very kindly helped clear up and the Heads were still there with James
riding in the dark.  The caravan was taken home as lights don’t work but
the driver told to collect the rest of the markers left at sections 9 and 10 -
Derek likes you to remember the trials he sets out - this one I will.
At the end of the day Biff said our Newsletter were like a book “I spent 3
hrs a night all week on the Christmas one”.  Then someone asked me if my
new Belstaff jacket was paid for with the heating allowance - I hope their
taxes go up.

GROUP TRIALS
Final round of South Coast Group for 2003 was by Brighton Club at
Faygate, it was very slippery but marks were low.  So it was a credit to
John Yardley and Kevin Mac who set it out.  Not many HR’s though some
appear in the results :

Over 40 : 1. (I Cole 12)  2. (H Reed 14)  3. (S. Jones 15)  4. Alan Lavender 25
7.  Mike Husband 36
Yellow Over 50 : 1. (R Charman 25)  2. Bob Collins 26

That ended the year and championship places were awarded on the basis
of the best 10 out of 12 events.  Again few HR’s but prominent in the inter
class where first three places went to Duncan Archer, Mark Jordan and
Pete Penton.  Bob Collins was 3rd in Over 50 B Group otherwise I fear we
did not shine due to our riders not entering sufficient events - why not give
it a go this year.
